Description

The Rummynose Tetra (Hemigrammus rhodostomus and closely related species like H. bleheri) is a small, peaceful schooling fish highly prized in the aquarium hobby for its striking appearance and synchronized swimming behavior. Native to the blackwater rivers of South America, particularly the Rio Negro and Amazon basins, this species features a shimmering silver body, bold black-and-white striped tail fin, and its namesake bright red nose. That vibrant red facial coloration isn’t just for show—it also serves as a reliable indicator of the fish’s health and water quality, often fading if the fish is stressed or conditions are poor.

Rummynose Tetras are best kept in groups of at least six, though larger schools of ten or more really bring out their natural behavior and visual appeal. They thrive in soft, acidic water with stable temperatures around 78–82°F (25–28°C), and they appreciate the presence of driftwood, leaf litter, and subdued lighting to mimic their native habitat. Peaceful and non-aggressive, they make excellent tank mates for other calm community fish like Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and small rasboras. With proper care, these elegant tetras can live 5–6 years, making them both a beautiful and rewarding addition to a well-maintained aquarium.
