The Desjardini Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) is one of the most spectacular tangs available for large saltwater aquariums. Instantly recognizable by its dramatic sail-like dorsal and anal fins, intricate striped pattern, and elegant swimming style, this species becomes an impressive centerpiece as it matures. Adults develop bold zebra-like markings accented with countless white spots and striking yellow highlights throughout the fins.

Highly active and constantly grazing, Desjardini Sailfin Tangs play an important role in reef aquariums by consuming nuisance algae from live rock and aquarium surfaces. They readily feed on film algae, hair algae, and various macroalgae, making them both beautiful and beneficial additions to established marine systems. While they are excellent algae grazers, they should also be offered a varied diet of marine algae, nori, spirulina-based foods, and quality frozen preparations to maintain optimal health and vibrant coloration.

Although generally peaceful toward most reef-safe fish, Desjardini Sailfin Tangs may become territorial toward other tangs or similarly shaped fish, particularly in smaller aquariums. Their active swimming behavior requires plenty of open space, strong water movement, and abundant live rock for grazing and shelter.
