Description
The Red Eye Red Tail Pufferfish (Carinotetraodon irrubesco), also known as the Red-Eyed Puffer or Red-Tailed Red-Eye Puffer, is one of the most unique and captivating freshwater puffers available in the aquarium hobby. With its striking crimson-red eyes, vibrant red tail, and curious personality, this rare species quickly becomes the centerpiece of any species-focused aquarium.
Like many pufferfish, the Red Eye Red Tail Puffer is highly intelligent and interactive. They quickly learn to recognize their owners, often swimming to the front of the aquarium at feeding time and actively exploring every corner of their environment. Their inquisitive nature and bold personality make them as entertaining to watch as they are beautiful.
Unlike schooling fish, Red Eye Red Tail Puffers are best kept individually or as a carefully managed pair in a heavily planted aquarium with plenty of visual barriers. They can be territorial toward one another and are well known for nipping the fins of slower-moving tank mates, making them best suited for a species-only aquarium or very carefully selected companions.
These carnivorous predators require a protein-rich diet consisting of frozen bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, snails, and other meaty foods. Offering hard-shelled prey such as small snails helps naturally wear down their continuously growing teeth and supports long-term dental health.
A heavily planted aquarium with driftwood, leaf litter, caves, and subdued lighting closely mimics their natural habitat and helps these puffers feel secure. Clean, stable water and excellent filtration are essential for keeping them healthy and displaying their best coloration.
If you’re looking for a freshwater fish with incredible personality, brilliant coloration, and fascinating behavior, the Red Eye Red Tail Pufferfish is one of the most rewarding species you can own.
