Green Swordtail – Xiphophorus hellerii (Copy)
$7.99
Description
The Green Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is one of the original and most iconic freshwater livebearers in the aquarium hobby. Known for its shimmering olive-green body, iridescent scales, and the long “sword” extension on the male’s tail, this hardy species has been a favorite of aquarists for decades. Their active nature, peaceful temperament, and ease of care make them an excellent choice for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.
Green Swordtails are constantly on the move, bringing life and activity to community aquariums. They thrive in aquariums with plenty of swimming space, live plants, driftwood, and open areas where they can display their natural behavior. Their subtle green coloration often shimmers with metallic blue, bronze, or gold highlights depending on the lighting, making them just as captivating as many of the more colorful selectively bred varieties.
These peaceful livebearers do well alongside tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, rainbowfish, gouramis, mollies, platies, and many other community fish. If keeping multiple Swordtails, it’s best to maintain one male with two or more females to reduce breeding stress on the females. Males may occasionally spar with one another, but serious aggression is uncommon in a properly sized aquarium.
As livebearers, Green Swordtails give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry. In heavily planted aquariums, some fry may survive by taking refuge among dense plants, mosses, or floating vegetation, making them a rewarding species for hobbyists interested in breeding.
Green Swordtails are omnivores and readily accept quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods, live foods, and vegetable-based foods. A varied diet helps maintain their health, vibrant coloration, and active personality.
Whether you’re building your first community aquarium or adding a classic species to an established tank, the Green Swordtail remains one of the most reliable, colorful, and rewarding freshwater fish available.
